ADSENSE HAS STOPPED MONETIZING SOME UKRAINE RELATED TOPICS

Google Adsense

Google sent a reminder to publishers that expands on current policy regarding displaying ads on content about Ukraine's war.

AdSense sent an email to publishers informing them of a new policy related to Russia's war on Ukraine, which could result in a decrease in earnings. The update is intended to expand on and clarify existing policy regarding where advertisements are not permitted.

Google is putting a halt to the monetization of specific content. The email was sent to publishers to remind them of a new policy regarding content about the Ukraine war and to expand on the current policy against monetizing content. Within the email subject line, Google framed the update as a "Important Notice: Ukraine Update."

According to the notice, "Due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, we will suspend monetization of content that exploits, dismisses, or condones the conflict." ...This pause includes, but is not limited to, claims that victims are to blame for their own tragedies or other instances of victim blaming, such as claims that Ukraine is committing genocide or intentionally attacking its own citizens."

The email above expands on the recently updated official Google Publisher Policies. The most recent policy update, which is available online, simply states: "Due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, we will suspend monetization of content that exploits, dismisses, or condones the conflict."

AdSense Policy is A Contract

Participation in the AdSense program implies that the publisher agrees to follow the program's policies. Publishers who use user generated content, such as comments or online forums, should be especially mindful of this new policy. Publishers who insist on hosting content that violates Google's policy must remove Google AdSense from pages that host such content. The policy makes no restrictions on the type of content that publishers may publish. It only informs publishers about the types of content on which AdSense may be displayed.

According to the policy, "Google contributes to a free and open web by assisting publishers in monetizing their content and advertisers in reaching out to prospective customers with useful, relevant products and services." To maintain trust in the ad ecosystem, we must set limits on what we will monetize."

So, if your content is incompatible with those rules for what type of content can be monetized, publishers may want to consider removing advertising from those pages because, while Google may stop monetizing the ads, Google may also terminate the AdSense account entirely. According to the policy, "If you do not follow these policies, Google may block ads from appearing against your content, suspend or terminate your account."
